St Sabina church, Christmas Eve 2007

St. Sabina is a Word-based, Bible teaching African-American Catholic Church that believes in the power of praise and worship.

We are a spiritual hospital where all are welcome and invited to "taste and see the goodness of the Lord."

Our purpose is to nurture and develop spiritually mature Christians who are not confined by the walls of the sanctuary, but can penetrate the world in order to present God's way of living as a divine option.

Dear Friend:

The Faith Community of St. Sabina has been a place of worship on the south side of Chicago for nearly 100 years. From its humble beginnings in a storefront on South Racine Avenue in 1916 to its current Cathedral-like Upper Church dedicated in 1933 the parish has been the center of religious and social activities in the community.

As the largest African-American Catholic Church and school in the Chicago Archdiocese, St. Sabina pursues its mission of faith and justice with no operating support from the Chicago Archdiocese. While this is a remarkable accomplishment for a Church in any community, it is a credit to the Faith of the parishioners who count on St. Sabina to renew them spiritually and educationally.

Recently, the community of St. Sabina was given the heartbreaking news that our great cathedral church building had structural problems attributed to the original design and could not be used until these safety concerns were addressed.  The repairs are extensive and have displaced the congregation.

The total cost to return the Church to the community- $1.5 Million Dollars!  Insurance will pay for repairs that will make the building safe but much more needs to be done to keep the sanctuary safe for years to come. Discussions with the Archdiocese have been futile – no funds will be forthcoming.

St. Sabina needs your help to bring one of the most beautiful sanctuaries in the Archdiocese back to the community.  It is estimated that the additional costs will be $1 million dollars, which will fall squarely on the shoulders of St. Sabina, a community not made up of vast wealth but of tremendous faith.

On December 4th, Mayor Daley and I, along with The Raising The Roof for St. Sabina Committee will hold a fundraising reception at the Samuel Akainyah Gallery.  Invitations will follow shortly.  We hope that you will join us on the 4th .  We also hope that you will support our mission by making a financial contribution today.  We have placed our faith in God and in the hands and hearts of friends like you. Please keep us in prayer.

In the Pursuit of Justice,
